The basis for this book is a breakdown on how habits work. Duhigg breaks the habit into three steps 1) The Cue (what triggers the habit) 2) The Routine (the behavior or thought pattern of the habit) 3) The Reward (The payoff for the habit) you can read more about The Habit Loop in my article. He uses this model to show how changing our habits can change our life.
